Calorie gains from alcohol soar

Koreans’ average calorie intake from alcohol increased 250 percent over the past 16 years, according to a report released by the state disease control agency on Monday.

The national nutrition survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the average daily consumption of alcohol in 2014 stood at 124.7 grams, up 2.6-fold from 48.9 grams in 1988.

During the same period, the average daily calorie gains from alcohol rose by 2.5 times to 100 calories from 39.3 calories.

The agency attributed the increase in the nation’s alcohol consumption to market expansion of low-alcohol-content drinks.

The report also showed that an individual’s average daily calorie intake stood at 2,074.5 calories in 2014, up 6.8 percent from 1,933.5 calories in 1988.
